  16. <p>Cincinnati Reds' owner sparks a furor over alleged racial
  17. remarks
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Using the word nigger gets you kicked off most teams. But
  20. since Marge Schott owns the Cincinnati Reds, she's probably not
  21. going anywhere. In depositions from a lawsuit filed against
  22. Schott by a former employee, several former Reds executives
  23. allege that they heard Schott refer to two players as her
  24. "million-dollar niggers." She denies using the phrase but admits
  25. using the N word. There are also charges that Schott has a
  26. swastika armband at home, but she argues that it's "memorabilia."
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     The suit has since been dismissed, but the charges live
  29. on, putting the city in an uproar and prompting a new look at
  30. racism in baseball. Atlanta Braves executive Hank Aaron called
  31. for an investigation. The N.A.A.C.P. hopes to use the
  32. controversy to compel Schott to hire more minorities; of 45
  33. front-office staff, only one Red is black. Jesse Jackson has
  34. talked with Schott and wants to discuss hiring practices with
  35. other baseball-team owners as well.
